Hey! It's Ok

That I moved here 6 months ago and I just spent my first weekend in town. But, seeing how I was working, it doesn't really count. I mean, if I didn't have to work, I wouldn't have been here.

That one of my childhood friends had her first baby, a daughter, last week! I'm so happy for her and her husband and I can't wait to meet her!

To love hockey as much as I do. Seriously...It's a bit of an issue. But in a good way. Who says girls can't be sports fanatics?

That I am planning a quick trip to Florida in a couple of months. I love Florida and haven't been in almost 2 years, so I'm really looking forward to it!

To be over the moon happy/honoured that Amber sent me an advanced copy of her new book! She says she's still working on it...But I love the fact that she offered to send me a copy and actually did! I can't wait to finish reading it! You can find Amber's first book here

Inspire Me

I hope everyone had a great weekend! My weekend was...different. Since moving here 6 months ago, this was the FIRST weekend I spent here! The reason why I spent the weekend here was because I had to work, so I have nothing interesting to report.

I have yet another BUSY week ahead of me! Besides wrapping up yesterdays fundraising event, getting caught up on 1.5 months of work and my regular work, this week I have two meetings (tonight and tomorrow), a going away lunch (Wed) and representing my work at the Local Little Theatre (Thurs-Fri).

I will definitely need a little inspiration to get through my week:

Have a great week!

Sunday Social- We're Getting Deep

Sunday! Today is event day for me....which just means I have to work because I have a fundraising event. Wish me luck that everything goes according to plan!

Sunday Social

What is your ideal way to relax
Escaping to my family's second/weekend home! The peace and quiet, being able to hide out aka be left alone and doing what I want- sleeping in, watching movies, reading and even walking around town.
Where is your favorite place to be
I guess the answer to this would be the second home (as mentioned above). I also love being at the beach.

Who do you consider your biggest role model
This is so tough to answer! I've been lucky to have a lot of really great people in my life who have set amazing examples for me.

I do consider Ivanka Trump and Brittany Toll as role models.
What does your life look like in 3 years?
I have no idea! I don't even know what my life will look like in 6 months! The nature of my industry means a lot of contract work and I seem to be in a period of transition. I hope, in 3 years, that my life will be happy, fulfilling, successful, kind and full of love and laughter.
If you could go back and change one decision what would it be?
Have choice I've made, was something that was one exactly what I wanted. Every decision I've made, has lead me to exactly where I am today.

I wouldn't go back and change anything.

What is your biggest accomplishment in life thus far?
It's hard to pick just once...I've accomplished so much. A random one; raising over $100,000 in a single fiscal year for a non-profit.

Weekly What?

I have mentioned Jenn, and how much I adore her, on more than one occasion. Jenn has a new link up starting this week! It's call Weekly What?
button

Basically, you put all of your Monday-Friday posts in one post on Saturday and then link up your Saturday post! What a great idea!

I've been so busy this month that I've done very little blog reading. This link will allow me to read summaries everyone's posts for the week and if I want to read more, I just click on the link to the full post. Seriously, GREAT idea!

Here is my Weekly What?

MONDAY:  I start most Mondays off with a quote, to Inspire Me. Just a little inspiration to work on during my week or to be reminded of.

TUESDAY: Every Tuesday, I link up with Amber for Hey! It's Ok.

WEDNESDAY: I know a lot of people who were pregnant- since my post on Wednesday, they have all had their babies! So, when I found a little piece of humour on How to Handle Your Baby, I just had to share!

THURSDAY: On most Thursdays, I post a recipe. This week, I shared how to make a party staple, Antipasto Tray.

FRIDAY: On the last Friday of every month, I've started posting Project Pinterest, where I take something I saw on Pinterest and try it out. This month, it was removing wax from containers.

Project Pinterest- Removing Wax From Containers

Like everyone else, I am addicted to Pinterest and I've decided to actually try some of the things I pin.

This month, I decided to try this pin-how to get wax out of old candles so you can reuse the containers, which originated on Yellow Brick Home. The original source can be found here.

The only candles I have are tea lights, so need to reuse those containers. But I love wax tarts/melts and I always struggled with how to get the wax out of my burner. Using the information from Yellow Brick Home, I decide to try this for my burner.

You will need:
  • Boiling water
  • A container with wax in it- candle holder or wax burner
As you can see, I didn't start with a a lot of wax in my burner, but it was still hard (prior to pinterest) to get it out.
I added boiling water and the wax started melting right away, which you can see above.

Once the wax melts, it floats to the top. It was tempting for me to scoop the wax out, but following the advice of Yellow Brick House, I didn't.

As suggested, I left it over night, and this is what it looked like in the morning, It was easy to scoop the wax out and/or break it away from the sides.

The Verdict:
I'm not sure. It worked the first time I did it, but not all times. I did try this on a variety of different kinds (ie Yankee Candle, Scentsy, etc) of wax tarts. I found that while some tarts didn't melt and float to the surface (as pictured above), sometimes the water would get under the wax (which you couldn't tell just by looking at it). I this happened, it was easier to get the wax out of the burner- cut through the wax and lift. But again, didn't always happen. I also learned it was important to use boiling water, not just hot water.

LOL- How To Properly Handle Your Baby

I know a handful of people who have either had or are having babies this month. In honour of all of them, I had to share this, which I originally found on Pinterest.

Hey! It's Ok

To be dreading this week...It's going to be busy, crazy, stressful and not enough time.

That I'm feeling unmotivated. I'm just exhausted- emotionally, physically and mentally.

To ask a lot of questions. It's the best way to learn about something.

That I used Twitter as a primary news source. With trending topics and links/comments posted by the people I follow, I have a good idea of what's going on in the world.

To love this month's ipsy bag! I loved all of the products in it (a first).

That I'm currently a part of two different giveaways. 36 Ads to 2 different winners, hosted by Paige (enter here) and a $100 Erin Condren gift certificate hosted by Lauren (enter here).

Blogkeeping- Giveaways, Guest Posts & More

Happy Friday! I can't believe that we are half way through January! Instead of doing a Favourite Thing entry this week, I thought I would do some 'Blogkeeping'.
2013 has been BUSY for me so far, but enjoyable. Work is crazy- we are short staffed and I have our biggest fundraiser at the end of the month, so I've been working super long days. Social life is active- including going to a rally and a murder mystery birthday dinner party this weekend, looking forward to both! And I've been guest posting- 2 last week, 2 this week and one more in the next week or so. I am exhausted!
This week, you could find me at Amber's blog, My Three Bittles, and at Michele's blog, Short Girl, Long Island. To find all of my guest posts, visit my About Me page.

Also this week, I've partnered with Lauren, from Pink on the Cheek, and several of her sponsors for a $100 gift certificate to Erin Condren! You can (and should!) enter here. I've also partnered with Paige, from A Dose of Paige, and some of her friends for a giveaway (36 ad spaces, 3 winners), which you can enter here.

Amber, is working on another book. Not sure when it'll be out, but I cannot wait to read it! You should get her current book, The Swimmer's Assistant, if you haven't already.

Chelsea, a fellow Canuck, my go-to for anything blog/social media related and designer of my blog, has a new blog name & design. Love both, super cute!
My Dream Sample Box is one of my favourite companies! If you haven't checked them out, you should! Their blog can be found here and visit their website here

Tif, from Ramblings of a Southern Belle, always has a lot of fun things going on over at her blog.

You should also go say hi to Jenn from Party of One, for the simple fact that she is awesome and I just adore her!

Know who else is awesome? Brittany, Jennifer and Molly!

Hope everyone survives Friday and has a GREAT weekend!

Book Club- Prep:A Novel

Author: Curtis Sittenfeld
Amazon Summary
Curtis Sittenfeld’s debut novel, Prep, is an insightful, achingly funny coming-of-age story as well as a brilliant dissection of class, race, and gender in a hothouse of adolescent angst and ambition.

Lee Fiora is an intelligent, observant fourteen-year-old when her father drops her off in front of her dorm at the prestigious Ault School in Massachusetts. She leaves her animated, affectionate family in South Bend, Indiana, at least in part because of the boarding school’s glossy brochure, in which boys in sweaters chat in front of old brick buildings, girls in kilts hold lacrosse sticks on pristinely mown athletic fields, and everyone sings hymns in chapel.

As Lee soon learns, Ault is a cloistered world of jaded, attractive teenagers who spend summers on Nantucket and speak in their own clever shorthand. Both intimidated and fascinated by her classmates, Lee becomes a shrewd observer of–and, ultimately, a participant in–their rituals and mores. As a scholarship student, she constantly feels like an outsider and is both drawn to and repelled by other loners. By the time she’s a senior, Lee has created a hard-won place for herself at Ault. But when her behavior takes a self-destructive and highly public turn, her carefully crafted identity within the community is shattered.

Ultimately, Lee’s experiences–complicated relationships with teachers; intense friendships with other girls; an all-consuming preoccupation with a classmate who is less than a boyfriend and more than a crush; conflicts with her parents, from whom Lee feels increasingly distant, coalesce into a singular portrait of the painful and thrilling adolescence universal to us all.

What I have to say:
This is actually one of my all time favourite books, which I read several times a year. I've actually mentioned this book before, which you can find here. I love this book so so many reasons. I love observations that Lee makes. I love the relationships she has with various characters in the book. I love Lee as a character, she is relateable and I see a little bit of my high school self in her.

I've already this book once in 2013 and I'm ready to read it again.

Hey! It's Ok

To think that  Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig were hilarious and a highlight of the Golden Globes!

To be reminded how lucky I am to work in a building with great community partners. We all work for different organizations, but we're willing to help each other out. These ladies were my lifesavers yesterday.

To be thankful to have the most amazing co-worker and friend. It's nice to know that there's someone who's got your back and that no matter how hectic things are, she's right there with me.

To want nothing more than to go home, put on your comfiest clothes, crawl into bed and sleep and/or cry. Sometimes you just need to do this because you know it will make you feel better. It won't make things better, but it'll make you feel better.

To be counting down the days to the start of the NHL season, which is Saturday (Jan 19)! I can't freakin' wait! I've missed hockey so much and I can't wait to watch my New York Rangers again!

Sunday Social

Another Sunday, another end to the weekend. I was hoping to have a productive weekend, and with the exception of replacing the burnt out car headlight, I didn't get anything accomplished. I had a hectic week at work and am coming down with a cold, so I slept a lot.

Favourite Thing- Smart Pretty Awkward

Happy Friday everyone! Even though I had yet another 3 day work week, I'm happy this week is over! It's been super busy and I've actually worked late the past 2 nights. This weekend will be quiet, but I'm looking forward to it!

Couple of things:
  1. You can find me over at Party of One today. Jenn, who I absolutely love and you should too because she's adorable, asked me to guest blog.
  2. Neely had me as a guest blogger yesterday on A Complete Waste of Makeup
This week's favourite thing:

A couple of years ago, I found (via Happy Brittany) an amazing blog which quickly became a favourite and a 'must read' for me.

The blog, Smart Pretty Awkward, by Molly Ford is a quick, weekly read that offers really great, useful tips. Molly starts her posts with an inspiring quote followed by 3 tips on how to be:
  1. Smarter
  2. Prettier
  3. Less awkward
Her tips are so simple, inspiring and easy to apply to every day life. 9 times out of 10 I start incorporating her tips into my life.

Smart Pretty Awkward really is one of those blogs that EVERY girl should be reading.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Not Quite There Yet & Twittering Thursdays

First of all, I am participating in Twittering Thursdays Twitter Hop, co-hosted by Kaitlyn (who is becoming one of my favourite bloggers) at Wifessionals.

Second of all, I'm participating in Not Quite There Yet co-hosted by Tarole from Island Livin' with One Haole Girl. This weeks hop is GFC.

*sigh*

I was going to write an entry, but my internet was done for 5+ hours and didn't get back up until almost midnight. I had a long day, worked an extra almost 2 hours on top of my 1.5 hour commute to work because I was out of town last night. I'm just exhausted

So...just the Twitter Hop today.

Hope everyone has a great Thursday!!

P.S. Yesterday I linked up with Paige from Eloping Stethoscope for Blog-Working Wednesday

Adventures In Academia & Campusbookrentals.com Spotlight

When I was in university, I spent a two hour lab watching The Simpsons. When my Dad found out, he wasn’t too happy and said something along the lines of; “Why am I paying for you to watch The Simpsons? You can do that at my house, for free.”  It was for a Pop Culture class, which was mandatory for my degree.

I was a Communication-Media & Culture major. Which means, watching reality TV (Television Studies), listening to music (Music & Politics), reading trashy romance novels (Intro to Pop Culture) and going to the movies (Popular Cinema) were all considered “research” and encouraged by our professors.

Something else encouraged by my professors? Buy textbooks.

My first day of Communication Theory (yes, Dad, I did take ‘serious’ classes too), the professor asked how many people had bought the textbook. Not one person raised their hand. During our first seminar, our TA told us that the prof was freaking out a bit because no one had bought their textbooks.

Going to buy textbooks was not a highlight of my academic experience.

I would wait in line for at least an hour only to be admitted into the cramped bookstore. I would elbow my way downstairs to pick up some textbooks and elbow my way back upstairs to get the rest. I would be carting around a small mountain of books with me, trying not to drop any, finally making it to the checkout line. I’d stand there for what seemed like forever, before being called up to the cashier. I would dig through my bag to find my student card before being told the final total of my purchase… My heart would break and I fought back tears as I parted with my hard earned money. My ordeal ended with lugging my textbooks, and praying my arms wouldn’t fall off in the process, across campus and home.  Does any of that sound remotely fun? Not. At. All.

Do you know what else wasn’t fun? How much I spent on textbooks, which was at least $1,000 a semester.

If I knew about Campusbookrentals.com when I was in university, you could bet a $1,000 (or a semesters worth of books) that this is a company I would’ve used!

Since 2007, students on over 5,000 campus’ have used CampusBook Rentals. Why wouldn’t they? The perks are endless! Some perks of renting your textbooks include:
  • The convenience of buying textbooks from the comfort of your own home/dorm room (no lines!!!)
  • Saving 40-90% off of bookstore prices (that’s money you can put towards Spring Break!)
  • You can highlight in the textbooks
  • Flexible renting periods
  • Free shipping both ways

One of the textbooks I used as a student was Communication Research Methods, which can be found on Campus Book Rentals here. I could pay almost $100 (my campus bookstore retails it for $98.25) or rent it for $26.77! That’s a HUGE savings!

On top of all this, getting your books from CampusBook Rentals, is actually a good deed. They’ve partnered with Operation Smile, which performs life saving cleft lip surgeries to children in need. For every book rented, they make a donation to Operation Smile. They are donating over 1,000 surgeries this year- or one surgery for every dollar I spent on a textbook, per semester.

DISCLAIMER: I was compensated to write this post, as is it being sponsored by Campusbookrentals.com. Content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Hey! It's Ok

That Canada didn't medal at the 2013 WJC. Sure, it's our first time not getting a medal in 14 years and getting up for the 4am games were BRUTAL...but Team Canada still played well and made Canada proud.

That the NHL lockout is over!!! I've missed NHL hockey so much and can't wait for the season to start on Jan 19!!

To be proud to be Irish, even though they didn't win BSC last night. I had a ton of fun at the viewing party. ND had a GREAT season and they should be proud of that.

That Brittany Toll (she answered 5 Questions a few months ago) from Happy Brittany, is now following me on Twitter! This basically made my life. Brittany is one woman who truly inspires me and is an amazing role model.

That I watched The Little Mermaid on the weekend. I love that movie and haven't seen it in ages. Disney classic.

5 Questions- Chelsea

Chelsea, from Yours Truly, is the first person to answer 5 Questions in 2013!
If you don't know Chelsea, you should! She is a follow Canadian and her blog is full of great content- mostly on fashion and style!

Another awesome thing about Chelsea? She designed my blog! Which, months later, I still love and frequently just look at, because it makes me happy. Chelsea is my go-to lady for all things blog. She designed my Christmas greeting for me and she verified me on Pinterest

Here are Chelsea's answers to 5 Questions:

1. Something on your bucket list:
Travel across canada! I've been many other amazing places but not all over my own beautiful country :)

2. Best piece of advice and/or favourite saying/quote:
"Every day may not be good, but there is good in every day"

3. Favourite place:
San Sebastian, Spain
a) Where to stay:
Enjoyss Hostel!

b) Where to eat:
Anywhere with tapas, mmm
c) What to see/do:
Lay on the beach, swim in the little lagoon area, hike up to the massive Jesus statue that is at this fortress sorta thing and watch the sun set. It's just amazing.

4. You're given $10,000 and 24 hours to spend it. You can't give it to other people, invest it or save it. What would you do:
You'd think I'd take an opportunity like this to splurge on expensive brands...but my frugal self would tell me to buy quantity over quality. I'd spend hours in stores like Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, Aeropostale and my fave online boutiques like Kiki La'Rue and Kintage snatching up bargain after bargain. I'd even go as far as to still use coupon codes, ha!!!

5. Historical figure or fictional character you'd like to be: I'm not much of a history buff, nor do I think I'd like to be living in the "olden days", so I'll have to go with a fictional character. Maybe Bella from Twilight cause Edward is so hot. HA. What a horrible answer.

Thanks Chelsea for taking time to answer 5 Questions!

Favourite Thing- These Memories Aren't Gone

This weeks favourite thing, is a friend and memories...without going into any detail. How's that for vague and not helpful/insightful?
It was 10 years ago yesterday...I can't believe that it's been 10 years. I still think of you all the time...I know now that conversation meant something to you, just as it meant something to me.
I'm so lucky to have known someone who is so hard to say goodbye to.
"The Time Has Come For You To Live...For You To Be Free..."
Forever loved. Forever remembered. Forever Cherished.
Best Intentions~Flatlined
I'm the face you see,
you see in the mirror,
now you wish that I,
Had somehow seen much clearer,
theses memories aren't gone,
but I can not return,
watching all along,
as all our pictures,
burn…

Chorus
And you see me standing there,
Standing next to the picture,
Of what I used to be,
All I want to be is free…
you hear my story told,
through this eulogy,
now that I am gone,
there's nothing I can be,
now its too late,
to listen and to change,
or find another way,
this fate has been arranged,
best intentions gone,
you’ll never be the same,
and now I can feel, the shame,

Chorus

now that I’m gone,
everything went wrong,
I’m sorry about the pain I've cause and times that I've dragged along,
of all the things I've seen,
and all the things I've done,
watching all along with you as all the pictures,
burn…
This was a hard post for me to write...even after 10 years, it's still too painful. Nothing I will say here will ever explain...will ever bee good enough. Just know you are missed.
RIP

Make With Me- Banana Pudding

Banana Pudding

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • Bananas
  • Vanilla wafers
  • Pie shell

To Make:
  • Mix sugar, flour and eggs in a saucepan
  • Slowly add milk and mix well
  • Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly
  • Remove from heat
  • Add vanilla
  • In a baked pie shell, layer banana and wafers
  • Pour mixture into pie shell
  • Enjoy!

Notes:
  1. Another recipe from a friend of Rhonda's (she collected recipes from friends and put together  cookbook).
  2. Rhonda's friend noted, if you like meringue, just separate the eggs. I've never done this.
  3. You can make your own pie shell, but I always use a pre-made one...it's just easier.
  4. I cannot stress this enough...make sure the pie shell is BAKED prior to adding ingredients.
  5.  This recipe can easily be turned into coconut pie! Just add coconut when you add vanilla. Rhonda's friend recommends 1 small can of coconut milk. I've use 1 cup coconut milk, 1 cup regular milk (instead of 2 cups of milk) and added shredded coconut.

Hey! It's Ok

That I added my birthday to the Blogger Birthdays Calendar! If you haven't added yours already, you should!

That I get up at 4:30am to watch the World Juniors. Sure, my sleep schedule is thrown off and I am exhausted. But it's worth it. Go Canada Go!

To be excited that my parents got me a crock pot for Christmas! I've never used one in my life but everyone said I should get one and how great they are. So, nor I have one and I do plan on using it.

To not be organized for 2013. Sure, I have some goals for the coming year, but I haven't done anything to put them in motion. Don't even get my started on blogging... but it'll come together.

That I've been off  from work for about a week and a half and I loved every minute of it. It's been relaxing. Yet, I could use one more day to unwind.

That, after 12 days away, I came back to my apartment to this:

Months ago, Amber at Brunch With Amber hosted a magazine swap. I was partnered with they beautiful and sweet Jenn from Party of One. Jenn gifted me a subscription to Fashion (yea!!) and the first issue was delivered while I was away! Thanks Jenn =)

To hope everyone has a fantastic 2013!
