Blogtember- Something Old

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

Share a photo of something old. Maybe something that has personal history for you, that was passed down to you, and that has special meaning to you. Tell us about it and why it's special.

First of all, I can't believe that this is the last day of Blotember and that I managed to do every single prompt!

Grandpa's high school ring

I know that the quality of the photo isn't that great, but this was the best I could do.

This is a photo of my grandpa's high school ring. I believe he graduated in 1944...the ring is tarnished, the colour has worn off and the inscription is hard to read. The ring consists of what I think is the school's crest and the name of his high school.

My grandpa, who passed away in 2011, was everything to me. He was a consistent presence in my life...seeing him at least once a week for 28 years. We shared a love of family, faith, art and culture, tennis, reading, creativity...

I truly value the time we spent together in his last years. I was blessed to see him 5 days before he died, to have one last visit. When he died, I was devastated and had the hardest time accepting that he would no longer be part of my life. I struggled.

About 6 months after he died, I found his high school ring- it was in a box of things that my grandma had given to my dad. I asked my dad while he was cooking, and probably not paying attention, if I could have the ring. He said yes, so I took it.

For my confirmation, my grandparents gave me a Celtic cross with a chain. I took the cross off the chain and replaced it with my grandpa's ring.I wear it almost every day.

My grandpa is always with me.

Inspire Me

Happy Monday and happy last day of September! This month has flown by...while it was a super busy month, a lot of really fun things happened- including Brock Homecoming and getting to see David Myles in concert (again). This week will be busy, as usual, but I will also be spending a lot of time with friends...so I'm looking forward to it.

Some inspiration to get through the week:

Sunday Social- Job

Weekend's go too quickly and I know I'm not the only one who thinks that. I had a surprisingly low key weekend...I met with my Mark Kay consultant on Friday and I went to a friend's birthday party last night. I go every year to the party and it is always a lot of fun. I have another busy week ahead of me, but I have a couple of fun things lined up too. It should be a good week.

Sunday Social

1. What is your dream job?
I am luck to have my dream job! Since high school, I've wanted to work in non-profit fundraising. Not only am I in non-profit, but I work for an organization (Alzheimer's) which is very near and dear to my family. It was a loooong and sometimes complicated, what-are-you-doing road, but I did it.

2. If you had just won the lottery and didn't need to work for money, what would you do with your time?
I think I would still work, but on a part time basis. I really do enjoy my job. I would maybe volunteer with other organizations on a fundraising/event basis. I currently have my own scholarship, but if I won the lottery, I think I'd establish my own foundation. And, of course, I'd travel!

3. What piece of career advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?
You have to REALLY love what you do. You will not make a lot of money, you will be unappreciated, you won't be supported by your boss, co-workers or the board, you will have to work nights and weekends, even though the office isn't open. You'll have to make a lot of sacrifices in your personal life, work under pressure and constantly be proving yourself. But if you REALLY LOVE what you do and are REALLY passionate about the organization, none of the above will matter.

Also, take a post grad related program (PR, Events, non-profit management) as it will give you hands on practical experience. And always follow your gut...if you think something's a good idea, no matter how out of the box it is, push to make it happen. You have to take risks in this industry.

4. What would be your ideal "just for fun" job?
I know it's a lot of work...but travel editor...with a focus on spas and 5 star resorts. I think it would be a lot of fun to travel to really cool and interesting places, staying in luxury hotels and get pampered. While writing the reviews and meeting deadlines have the potential to be stressful, I still think this would be a fun job.

5. What was your first "real" job?
Working at my dad's company. I would fill in when his secretary was on vacation.

Weekly What

Idea taken from my darling friend Jenn from Party of One for Weekly What?

Basically, you put all of your Monday-Friday posts in one post on Saturday! What a great idea! I love the concept of having all of your posts from the week in one post- it's a great summary of the week on a blog.

MONDAY: I started the week off with some inspiration.

TUESDAY: I linked up with Amber for Hey! It's Ok.

WEDNESDAY: I posted answers to questions about Technically Beautiful Ontario.

THURSDAY: I shared nothing (besides my Blogtember post)...took a day off from blogging.

FRIDAY: I finished the week with some athleticism.

I also participated in Blogtember everyday this week. You can find those posts here, here, here, here and here.

Blogtember- Facebook Friends

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

An anonymous letter to your Facebook friends. Be as snarky as you'd like. (but don't include people's real names.)

Dear Facebook Friends,

I am over it...I am over Facebook. I would love to be able to delete my profile and walk away. In fact I did that for the summer and it was amazing. I only came back, because I felt I had to. If I'm not on Facebook, I miss out on a lot.
We rely on Facebook to update everyone on important and not so important aspects of our lives; new jobs, engagements, marriages, pregnancy, birth of children, birthdays, moving to new cities, vacations, where we went for lunch...everything related to life is shared via Facebook, including invites to parties, events and even dinner.

I am a supporter of social media and the concept of a Global Village...I really am.

But please, for the sake of humanity, step away from your computer, tablet, smartphone, whatever device(s) you use to access Facebook and use another medium- telephone call or face to face visit maybe- to share the happenings of your life with me.

I am not just your Facebook friend, I am your real life friend too. Remember that.
Thanks,
Melissa

Favourite Thing- Athleticism

Happy Friday! I can't believe this is the last Friday of September...Crazy! Do you know what else is crazy? This video:

(For some reason, the video just shows a white screen when played within the blog post. But if you view full screen, it works.)
And some people think that cheerleaders aren't athletes...

Blogtember- Coffee Shop Emotions

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

Go to a coffee shop. Order a favorite drink. Write about what makes you happy and what makes you sad. Or write about anything you'd like! Bonus points for including a photo from the coffee shop. (I recommend downloading Ommwriter and bringing headphones along!) *if you can't make it to a coffee shop, at least leave your usual space and write someplace new.
So, I'm kinda cheating with this prompt. Because my life is so busy, I usually write posts (this one included) the night before and schedule them, and I usually write them pretty late. So no coffee shop for me, but I am drinking coffee as I write this.

For this prompt we can write about whatever we want. There are SO MANY things I could write about...I have a long list. But, I had something happen yesterday and I really wanted to write about it, so here it goes.

I work in non-profit fundraising.

I hands down, without a doubt, love my job. I love what I do, I love the organization I work for and I believe in the mission, vision and mandate of my organization.

But I don't get paid a lot- making almost half of what I made when I was in the corporate world. I work long hours- going in early, staying late, working from home at night, working on weekend. I am under a lot of stress- I'm responsible for bringing in the money so that our organization has funds to run our programs and services and to more or less keep the doors open. I am ALWAYS working- everyone I meet is a potential donor, sponsor, supporter, contact. Heck, I saw David Myles (Canadian musician) this week and I was talking to him about where I work and what I do...he told me that he did work with a sister organization in New Brunswick.

Non-profit is not an easy gig. You have to love what you do. Really love it.

And I do. I love my job. I really, really do. But there are times, where I just feel so worn out and exhausted. Maybe a little frustrated and overworked. Perhaps a bit unappreciated. I might even want to take a day or two off to regroup, but I can't...too many meetings scheduled, needing to be in the office for one reason or another, looming deadlines...I realize it'll be at least 2 weeks before I can have a break, a lot of times longer.

I still love what I do and am happy to go to work, but my energy is lower and my passion for what I do isn't at the level it normally is. I feel a little bit unfulfilled.

Then it happens...something that puts things into perspective, makes you feel energized/passionate/fulfilled/etc. Everything becomes worth it.

It could be the president of the board going out of her way to tell you that you're doing a good job or a former client saying they don't know what they would've done without your organization or a stranger (or David Myles =) saying the work your organization does is much needed and important.

Or, in the case of yesterday, a text message from a contact saying they are giving our organization $5,000.

When I found that out, I nearly cried. Because of the work I did...contacting them, inviting them to events, giving them the opportunity to learn about our organization and the work we do...they went out of their way to raise $5,000 specifically for our organization.

They saw the value of our organization, they need for our programs and services, what we add to the community. They too believe in the work we do, our mandate, vision and mission. They want to enable us to continue to help the clients we serve...to make lives a little better. They believe in us.

It's moments like this, situations like this, that remind me why I do the work I do.

Blogtemer- Mistake

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

Write about a time you screwed up - a mistake you made.

So I am going to be difficult in writing about this prompt... I don't believe in mistakes. I feel if you are able to learn something from an experience, grow from the situation, it was not a mistake. Sure, maybe you did something you shouldn't have done or something you might regret, but if you can take something away from the experience, it was not a mistake. I firmly believe this.
If you do not take something away from the experience- if you don't learn or grow- than that is mistake...not what you did, but not taking the time to learn from what you did.
I believe that everything happens for a reason and that everything works out the way it's supposed to.
Other people might look at my life and think that I make a lot of mistakes...and maybe I do. But because I have been able to take something away from every situation I am in, I don't see them as mistakes.

Technically Beautiful

Everyone knows how much I love Canada and for the longest time, I have wanted to showcase Canada on my blog. So, I've decided to ask Canadian bloggers to answer 5 questions about their province.

This week Cathy, from Cathy Thinking Out Loud, is answering questions about Ontario.

1. Where are you from:
I grew up from Grade 6 onwards in Mississauga, Ontario and lived in the GTA until I married, with the exception of four years I attended University in Ottawa. I relocated to Ottawa permanently about 21 years ago.

2. Favourite thing about your province:
I like the diversity of the people in Ontario and the diversity of places; large urban cities, small towns, isolated forest and northern shield, lakes, rivers. It has it all.

3. What is your region (province and/or city) known for:
My region is the Capital of Canada and is known for Parliament Buildings, the Rideau Canal (longest skating rink) and Beaver Tails. This area is also known for its Maple Syrup.

4. Where to:
a) Stay:
Chateau Laurier, Brookstreet Hotel Kanata, Holiday in Kanata. There are also some lovely Bed & Breakfasts and Inns in Ottawa and its surrounding areas.
b) Eat:
Black Cat Bistro (Preston St) The Works Gourmet Burger Bistro (several locations) The Lone Star Texas Grill (several locations) Shawarma Palace (Richmond Rd) Dagwood’s Subs (Kanata) Baan Thai (Centrepointe Rd) Haveli’s Indian Restaurant (Robertson Rd) Sukhothai Restaurant (Robertson Rd). Remember to have a Beaver Tail and Poutine when visiting the capital.
c) Go/what to do:
There are tons of things to do in the Capital Region including Bluesfest, the Tulip Festival, Winterlude, and nowhere beats Ottawa on Canada Day. There is the National Art Gallery and many museums including the Agricultural Museum which is a working farm. The Rideau Canal and Ottawa River offer water activities. Ottawa has many kilometres of bike trails, and parks and trails for hiking and long walks. There are tours of the Parliament Buildings, the Mint, and the Governor General’s house: Rideau Hall. Ottawa has both NHL and OHL hockey for the sports enthusiast. Lastly the National Art Centre (NAC) and Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) offer plays and performances to suit all tastes.

5. A "must know" about your province:
I think a visit to Northern Ontario is a must when visiting Ontario. Whether it is the wild untamed Algonquin Park or the five star resorts in Muskoka you will find beautiful natural surroundings, and breathtaking views.

Thanks Cathy for taking the time to answer these questions!!

Blogtember- Lilly Agenda Review

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

Review a book, place, or product.

This is actually a great prompt for me as I have many products, items and places to review! I make notes on a lot of things and try to fir them into a blog post. Because of this prompt, I can strike "review Lilly agenda" from my list of blog posts to write!
I love Lilly agenda as much as the next girl. In fact, I bought two agenda this year- a large agenda for my life (work, social and personal) and a pocket sized agenda for my blog.

The large agenda is great for me. I have so much going on in my life and there's enough space to fit everything in. I like how at the beginning of each month, there is a calendar for the month and then there is separate space in the following pages for each day.

In the monthly calendar, I'll put what is happening (ex "staff meeting") and then in the space for the that day, I'll write more details (ex "9-11:30, City Office"). I love having the monthly view and daily-ish views.

While I wasn't crazy about the prints this year, I do love how bright and colourful Lilly agenda are. Each month has it's own print and a quote or saying. I've actually taken to writing these quotes on a wipe board at work for my co-workers to look at all month.

Other agenda features:
  • pocket to keep things in
  • stickers (which aren't a big deal to me...I only use them to give to co-workers)
  • year at a glance- a page that has all the monthly calendars for 2014 and a page for 2015
  • dates to celebrate (each month is listed with space to fill in important dates such as birthdays)
  • Reasons for a Party in 2014- listing of all 2014 holidays
  • Lilly in the Stars- horoscopes. This is a new addition this year. While it's cute...this wasn't a selling feature for me
  • Section for notes. I actually use this ALL the time. I take my planner with me everywhere, so frequently pull it out during meetings
  • Reinforced tabs- this is a new feature this year. In the past, the tabs were paper. Mine never ripped, but I know they did rip for some people. Mine did get pretty bent and 'worn', so I'm happy to see this change
What don't like, is that last year there was an 'address book' section to keep track of contact info for people. This was removed this year and replaced with Party Planner notes (a single page that is just like the note pages, except it's right beside the reasons to party in 2014 list) and the horoscope. I'm not likely to use either of these sections and if they weren't included, I wouldn't miss them (and I still would've bought the planner). I would much rather have the address book section.

The way the agenda is laid out (monthly view followed by daily view), combined with the notes section, plus how 'fun' the agenda is (bright colour and prints) are the reasons why I buy Lilly agendas.

I had a Lilly agenda last year and got TONS of compliments on it. In fact, when I went to order my agenda this year, a co-worker ordered one too. Another co-worker was in the office the day they were delivered and she ended up ordering one as well.

Hey! It's Ok

Idea taken from Amber at Airing My Dirty Laundry One Sock At A Time.

To be exhausted. I've had a lot of late nights, early morning and long work days. I'm getting worn out and would love to take a day off and do nothing. Sadly, my schedule doesn't allow that anytime soon.

That I had a BLAST at Brock Homecoming! I went to a ton of events, met some great people and re-connected with people I already knew. I seriously had the BEST time and can't wait for next year!

To be wanting summer back. Or at least want the warm weather back. It became chilly quickly in Ontario. I'm not ready for this cool Fall weather.

That I saw David Myles in concert, again, last night. It was a small, intimate venue and another amazing show! He sang my favourite song last night, How'd I Ever Think I Loved You, which he didn't play the last time I saw him.

To be disgusted with my loud neighbour...it sounds like he just spit in the hallway. Classy.

Blogtember- Life Lately

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

A "life lately" post. What you're up to, how you're feeling, how you're doing on your goals, etc. Bonus points for great photos!

I haven't done a life lately post in awhile...I've been too busy!!

Saturday of Labour Day Weekend, I saw David Myles in concert. I had been looking forward to it ALL summer. He didn't disappoint! I even got to meet him after the show. I haven't had a chance to blog about the show yet...but it's on my list of things to do! I will be seeing him in concert again tonight...I'm looking forward to it!
The next day, Sunday, my summer friend (who is now in London, England...boo) had a dinner party...something else I haven't have the chance to blog about. It was fantastic! We had our meal outside and dessert inside the antique store at one of the tables. Dinner was elegant, food was delicious and the company was entertaining.
I did manage to take the Tuesday after Labour Day off, giving myself an extra long weekend. I spent time relaxing, reading, at the beach and just enjoying the last little bit of summer. I even went into the lake, where there were a lot of waves- it was really fun.

I am a member of Beta Sigma Phi and we have started our year. We had Beginning Day in August and our first meeting and program earlier this month, with our first social tomorrow. I am now the City Council rep, so I went to that meeting earlier this month as well.

Of course, work is keeping me BUSY! I've had an event meeting, a meeting with a local university student group that is putting on a fundraising event for us, staff meeting, department meeting, committee meeting, a meeting with CTV and an event kicking off our annual fundraising campaign so far this month, plus the actual campaign prep. Work is keeping me busy!

I did have the opportunity to attend a young professionals networking event last week. It was fun and I met a lot of interesting people. I'm hoping to have the opportunity to connect with them in the near future. I met two friends there and we decided that we should break out and network. To make it fun, we thought we'd see who could collect the most business cards in 20 minutes. They each collected two and I collected 7 or 8 and I even had meaningful conversations with these people! Outside of the 20 minutes, I collected an additional 6 cards.
A co-worker and I had previously started a Social Committee at work, but no one came out to any of our events, except the one social where we went out for dinner. So, last week, we decided to disband the Social Committee and decided to create the Dinner Club, because everyone has to eat. We're hoping to have our first Dinner Club dinner this week.
This past weekend was Brock Homecoming!!! I had been looking forward to Homecoming for months and it was just as much fun as I thought it would be! There will be a future blog post with a full Homecoming report, but in the spirit of this prompt; The weekend started off on Friday with an alumni pub night. I went with a friend and ended up seeing a number of people I knew. I enjoyed it. Saturday was the day to be on campus. I attended the Alumni lunch and Cameo Club, people who graduated 25 years or more ago get inducted into the club, which was followed by a champagne reception, which I also attended. The weekend ended with an Alumni Wine Tour. We spent the day touring 3 wineries and of course tasting the wine! Again, future blog post about all of this. It was a REALLY fun weekend!!

So that's what I've been up to lately. In the near future aka the next week, I have a meeting with one of my boss' to talk about my new role and setting up some exciting projects, I have another meeting with CTV, and a Brock Alumni meeting. I have some fun coming up too... a grand opening of a retirement residence, a Mary Kay facial and a friend's birthday party.

And there you have my entire September...I'm exhausted just thinking about it!

Inspire Me

I can't believe that Monday is here again! I had the BEST weekend! It was Brock Homecoming and I had a blast! I started with Alumni Pub Night on Friday, spent Saturday on campus doing Alumni events (lunch, tours, etc) but sadly didn't make it to any of the athletic events, and finished the weekend with the Alumni Wine Tour yesterday. It was so great to go 'home' to Brock and connect with other Alumni. I can't wait until next year!

Tonight I am going with a friend to see David Myles!! This is the second time I'm seeing him this month...I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to blog about the first time I saw him! I'm really looking forward to tonight.

As always, a little inspiration to get you through the week:

Sunday Social- Hand Bags

Happy Brock Homecoming! I have had the most amazing weekend so far- Alumni pub night on Friday was a blast and I spent all day yesterday on campus connecting and celebrating alumni. Today, we are doing an Alumni Wine Tour- three wineries + two buses + one lunch=a an amazing way to end Homecoming Weekend!

Sunday Social

1. What is your favorite handbag you've ever owned?
I'm not sure if I've had a favourite...I only buy bags that I like. I'm a HUGE fan of tote bags (LOVE them!) just because I carry so much stuff with me at all times. They are functional and perfect for my lifestyle. I do use this bag a ton, especially in the summer:
Lime Green Ralph Lauren

I bought this bag YEARS ago (you can see that it's been well used) but I get so many compliments on it. Plus it makes it easy to spot me in a crowd.

2. What is your dream handbag you lust over?
Right now, this one:
T1-BL
Dagne Dover
Like practically every girl out there...i would love to own a Birkin! Or a vintage quilted Chanel.

3. What are the daily essentials in your purse or work bag?
Wallet, two sets of keys (car/apartment, work), Blackberry, Kindle, usb, lip product (balm/gloss), business cards, hair elastic or clip.

4. What's in your purse (with pictures)?
So, I usually use a tote bag on a daily basis. But, because it's Homecoming, I've downsized to a smaller bag (the lime green Ralph Lauren bag mentioned in the first question). So, here's what I have:

  1. Wallet
  2. Kindle
  3. Brock Alumni sunglasses (they actually say 'Brock Alumni' on the side)
  4. Keys
  5. Lip balm
  6. Business cards
  7. Pens
  8. Not pictured: hair elastic (after I took the picture and sent it to my laptop, I realized I didn't take the elastic out of my bag for the photo), Blackberry (it was used to take the picture).

Blogtember- Comfort

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

 React to this term: comfort.

When I first read the word 'comfort' I thought of a very specific person and they hugs they give. This is a person, who not only gives great hugs but has comforted me many times over the years. This initial thought was quickly followed by the thought of a favourite sweatshirt.

While the sweatshirt is comfortable, when I'm having a rough time or long day or...anything that is not an ideal situation, I always think of how I just want to go home and put this sweatshirt on. It really is a comfort thing to me.

Amber's Birthday Giveaway- Cold, Hard. Cash!

My sweet friend Amber is celebrating her birthday with a week's worth of giveaways. That's 5 giveaways! Today is giveaway 5 of 5 and Amber and friends (including me!) are give away cold, hard cash! You can enter below...good luck!!

Blogtember- Dinner Party Dread

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

Creative writing day: write a (very short) fictional story that starts with this sentence:
"To say I was dreading the dinner party would be the understatement of the century."

The story does not necessarily need to have a conclusion - you can leave your readers wishing for more!

To say I was dreading the dinner party would be the understatement of the century. Knowing that this dinner party was being held in my honour, meant I couldn't skip out. I know that their hearts were in the right places, but why would 4 ladies in their 80's think a 20-something would enjoy a dinner party that involved early bird specials?

I put on my most conservative outfit, I did not want to be responsible for giving anyone heart failure. That really would've killed (ha!) this dinner party...or at least make it interesting. Anyway, conservatively dressed, I headed out to meet these sweet, walker using, hearing aid sporting ladies.

They say the early bird catches the warm. In this case, the early bird catches the oyster. Our 4 o'clock dinner started with a round of oysters, that were ordered special, just for me...the person who can't stomach seafood to the point she actually tells people she's allergic to it. Once the oysters were delivered to the table, it was revealed that none of my dinning partners liked oysters, so they were all for me.

Not wanting to insult anyone or hurt their feelings, and knowing that this dinner party was something these ladies thought was nice to do for me, I did what any polite person would do- I ate an oyster.

This is when things really started to go downhill...

Boys Behind The Blog- Round 4

Boys Behind the Blog is a monthly linkup featuring your husband/fiance/boyfriend/best guy friend/dad/brother/grandpa! Stephanie & Mal created this link up to brag about their men and get them more involved in their blogs.

Boys Behind The Blog

Before getting to this rounds questions, let me tell you a little about the boy. I've known him for years and he's someone I love...even if he's not a New York Ranger fan.

1. If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
A bear or a shark.

2. What is your favorite meal?

Cheese pizza.

3. Do you use any forms of Social Media? What is your favorite?

No and none.

4. Beer, wine, liquor, other, or none of the above?

Beer...can't believe you even asked.

5. Complete the sentence: "Never have I ever..."

Gone skydiving or bungee jumping.

Blogtember- Photos

I have decided to participate in Blogtember. It seems like something that would be pretty fun. I have no idea if I'll be able to actually do this, but I'm going to give it a try!

Today's prompt:

Only photos
