Weekly Wrap Up

A blog friend of mine, years ago, had a Saturday link up called 'Weekly What'. She eventually cut back on her blogging and the link up came to an end, but I kept doing it...I liked the concept; basically you put all of your Monday-Friday posts in one post on Saturday. It's essentially a summary of the past week on your blog.

I thought for 2015, I would bring the concept back...

MONDAY: I started the week off with some inspiration.

TUESDAY: I linked up with Amber for Hey, It's Ok!.

WEDNESDAY: I reviewed Lush's BB Seaweed face Mask.

THURSDAY: I shared the decorations from the Bedtime Stories Baby Shower I hosted for a friend.

FRIDAY: I finished the week with an update on my New Year's Resolution and how I'm doing with it.

Friendly Resolution- February

My friends are my world. I try really hard to be a good friend and I try really hard to work on my friendships. It's so easy to let friendships fade if you move, get married, have a baby, start a new job...there are so many reasons/excuses for friendships to fade. I've always tried to maintain my friendships; generally one or two visits a year with texting, phone calls and Facebook messages in between.

I'm not big on New Year Resolution, because let's be honest, most of us rarely stick to them. This year, I decided that every month, I would make the point to connect with two friends. How did I do in February?

J- One of my Sorority Sisters and I met up for drinks and appetizers earlier this month. Last time I saw her was in December, so not that long ago. It was so nice to have a night out with her, she's so much fun and I really miss spending time with her on a regular basis.

K- A long time family friend, someone I used to spend a ton of time with her. I see her out at events and things throughout the year, but it has been year's since she and I had spent some real time together. I had a chance to see her new home (that's she lived in for a few years and that was previously my great-aunt's) and went out for chicken fingers- my favourite!

L-  a current co-worker. She works out of a different office and I don't spend a ton of time with her. She and I went to the Butterfly Conservatory. We had a lot of fun, learned a few things; we had the chance to see a couple of butterflies emerge from their chrysalis (not cocoon, those are moths), watch their wings open and dry, and see some butterflies take their first flight! We took a look at the exhibitions and then went to the cafe for tea. It was a lot of fun.

J & K- two of my former co-workers. I saw K about a year ago and I haven't seen J in about two years. I love these ladies and miss them like crazy. For my birthday, I was given tickets to see Royal Wood and I asked K to come with me. J met us for dinner and drinks before the show (which was amazing, as usual). So great to see and spend time with them both.

I realize that I likely won't connect with so many friends in the coming months- I think that two is a realistic number. I'm really hoping this is a 'resolution' I can stick with. Like I said, my friends are my world and I think it's so important to put time and energy to build and maintain friendships.

Baby Shower Part 2- Decorations

Almost a year and a half ago, I hosted a 'Bedtime Stories' Baby Shower for a dear friend of mine. Even though the actual baby shower was so long ago, I still want to share details of the event with everyone. This is a timeless, gender neutral and fun theme.

Today I wanted to share the decorations!! We had the usual balloons and streamers but I also wanted decorations that were unique to the theme- bedtime stories- and would not take a ton of time to set up; we would be setting up while the guest of honour was out picking up lunch, so about 15 minutes.

I used inspiration from here and here, deciding to turn the gift and refreshment tables into 'beds'. A quick trip the the dollar store and I had everything I needed! In total, I spent less than $20 on decor.

All beds need pillows, which I made (first picture). I bought plastic tablecloths, taped three sides, stuffed it with tissue paper and then taped the fourth side. These were so easy to make and because they weren't real pillows, it didn't matter if they got ruined.

The other items that I bought to make the 'beds' (picture 2) were more plastic tablecloths and books. I bought a white tablecloth to cover the table and then coloured/patterned ones to make the 'bedding'. Again, because these were from the dollar store, it didn't matter if they got ruined. I also picked up a couple of books (from the dollar store) that I incorporated into the decor, plus the mom-to-be was able to keep these books after the shower for baby to enjoy later.

The third picture (gift table) shows the completed 'bed'. You can see the pink tablecloth was placed over the table and folded down to look like bedding, the pillow was placed at the head of the 'bed' and we included a bear (left over from a work event and later sent home with mom-to-be) 'tucked in' and reading a book.

The decoration, although simple, really tied the theme together and added that 'something extra' to our event space- which was our meeting room at work, so not an exciting space to begin with. The decor was cost effective, easy to assemble and super cute!

BB Seaweed- Lush Face Mask

I love Lush products for a ton of reasons; environmentally friendly, natural ingredients, hand made products, ethical company (no animal testing, ethical sourced ingredients)... there are so many reasons to love this company! Plus, their products are amazing!  The products actually work and they smell good.

Last month, I discovered that I live about half an away from a Lush store. Up until this point, I had only been to stores a handful of times and did most of my Lush buying online. But I decided to venture to the store, with it being so close and all because:
  1. The stores are little slices of heaven.
  2. The stores smell devine.
  3. The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly.
  4. I've been dying to try their face masks, which are only available in stores.
BB Seaweed

One of their staff lead me to the face mask section. She explained to me that the masks usually arrive on Thursday and are gone by Sunday. She suggested that I try the BB Seaweed mask (pictured above), because it's good for all skin types and would help my dry skin.
She also told me that the masks are good for three weeks and because the ingredients are all natural, you can use the mask everyday without it doing any harm to your skin.

After the first time I used this product, I understand the hype!! It was a bit awkward to apply when there was a huge piece of seaweed, but that's such a small issue. After the first time I used this mask, my skin looked brighter, smoother and overall healthier. It did leave my skin feeling hydrated, but that didn't last as long as I would like...but again, I have SUPER dry skin!

I did use this product a few days in a row, and it did not cause any irritation to my skin. Like most Lush products, it smelled pretty good (and let's be honest, not all face masks do) and I like that it wasn't greasy. Not only is this a mask, but it also exfoliates.

Future plans include another trip to the Lush store to pick up more of their masks to try.

Love, love, love this product and I highly recommend it!! Like I said, after trying this product, I understand the hype around Lush masks.

Hey, It's Ok

Airing My Dirty Laundry

To be hopeful. I have to be. I know this will work out and that my time will come. It's hard not to be disappointed or frustrated. I have hope this is it.

That I was woken up by a message sent to my Blackberry, that resulted in a laughter filled convo with some former co-workers. I miss those girls.

To be having some crazy dreams the past few nights... a 12 hour helicopter ride to Iceland, a co-worker being a CSIS (Canadian CIA) agent, living on a tv series set...at least they are entertaining.

That I did not watch the Oscars. Just not interested. I heard that it went past midnight, which is way too long! Even though I didn't watch, I will say that Boyhood should have won.

To be ready to move on.

Inspire Me- Snowflake

I really do wish weekends were a little bit longer. I had a pretty quiet weekend. On Saturday, I went to the Butterfly Conservatory with a friend, finished reading a book, watched most of Season 7 of The Big Bang Theory and slept a lot. I'm still not 100% over my cold, but I am feeling better. I'm also still feeling exhausted and could use hours more sleep.

The good news is, I have a short work week; I have Thursday and Friday off, thanks to a lot of vacation time that needs to be used by the end of the March.

Anyway, some inspiration for the week:

There are two things to take from this quote. The first one being that everyone is different and everyone has something of value to offer. This can be hard to remember when you encounter someone you really don't like or someone who is nothing but negative. We all have something about us, try and see the good in each other, appreciate each other for our differences.

The second perspective is a personal one. We are all unique and not supposed to be like everyone else. So, don't compare yourself. We are supposed to be different. There is no one like you, there is no one that can offer the same talents and qualities as you. In your own way, you are beautiful...physically, mentally and emotionally.

Sunday Reading & Coffee

I always felt reading the Sunday newspaper and drinking coffee was a very grown up thing to do and something I should  be doing, so I did. While I no longer have a newspaper subscription, I still feel that a great Sunday includes coffee and reading.

With this concept, I decided each week- on Sunday- to share some of my favourite reads from the past week. So grab a cup of coffee (or your beverage of choice) and enjoy these reads.

We have had some cold and snowy nights (and days) recently, so I thought this article, How To Survive A Night In Your Car, would be vital to share.

9 Life Lessons I Learned From Being In A Sorority are so true and a nice reminder, even if you weren't part of Greek Life.

For 2015, I have set a couple of goals for myself, including connecting more with friends. This article, The Ties That Bind: Discovering The Power Of Female Friendship, goes nicely with that goal. Friendships are so important and worth the work.

Grilled cheese sandwich is one of my all time favourite foods. I can't wait to try these 7 Ways To Make Your Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!!

WEDNESDAY: I shared one of my favourite songs.

THURSDAY: I went into the archives for Baby Shower Part 1: Theme & Invitation. I actually am going to be sharing more Baby Shower details over the next few weeks.

FRIDAY: I finished the week with nothing. Exhausted and still sick, I took a day off.

From The Archives: Baby Shower Part 1- Theme & Invite

Almost a year and a half ago, I hosted a 'Bedtime Stories' Baby Shower for a dear friend of mine. The shower was so much fun to plan, almost as much fun as the actual party!

I had every intention on sharing details of the shower on the blog, but never really got around to it. Better late than never, right?

Even though the actual baby shower was so long ago, I still want to share details of the event with everyone. This is a timeless, gender neutral and fun theme.

The day of the Baby Shower, I posted details about the theme and I posted the custom invitations I had made. Please visit the original post here for all of the details!!

Over the next few weeks, I will be posting other elements of the shower, which will include refreshments (with recipes), decorations, games, book suggestions and a one of a kind gift.

Trust me, you don't want to miss these details!!

Few Things Pure In This World

Happy Wednesday!!! I had planned to post a book review today, but then I realized that I haven't read any books in awhile!! I LOVE to read and I know that I haven't had the chance to pick up a book in a long time, I just didn't realize how long it's been! I'll definitely have to change that.

In place of a book review, I thought I would share one of my favourite songs. This song is back from my university days and bring back some special memories.

Hey, It's Ok!

Airing My Dirty Laundry

To have such amazing family and friends who went out of their way to send me birthday wishes- via text, Facebook and phone calls. It means the world to me that people remember- despite Valenti's Day overshadowing my day of birth- and go out of their way to reach out to me.

That I'm disappointed with the lack of birthday goodness. I didn't do anything to celebrate...or anything in general. It was kind of a waste and now I have to wait an entire year. I was sick all weekend (4 days and counting) and spent my birthday lying on the couch with a throat that felt like it was on fire, a nose that wouldn't stop running and the most painful earache

To have no interest in 50 Shades of Grey. I didn't read the books and I have NO interest in the movies. To be honest, I don't get the hype.

That I shouldn't watch How To Get Away With Murder before going to bed. Great show...but it definitely doesn't help me unwind or slow my mind down (and it might scare me a bit).

To want to take a day off, curl up and read an entire book, start to finish. There's nothing like getting lost in a good book, and it's something I haven't done in ages.

Galentine's Day #NoBoysAllowed

Last year, a friend wished me a Happy Galentine's Day. I repeated the sentiment back to her, but had NO idea what she was talking about. I did a little Google-ing and found out that Galentine's Day, which is February 13, is a day to celebrate our gal pals.

If you watch the show Community- which I do not- you are familiar with Galentine's Day. I love this concept! I know I would be lost without my girlfriends. I have some of the most supportive, intelligent, fun, loyal and a bit crazy (in a good way) friends.

While I like to celebrate my friends all year long, I think this is a good holiday to celebrate. If we have one day a year- Valentine's Day- to celebrate our love, we should have a day to celebrate our friendship. I do have a hard time getting on board with V-Day, I have no problem jumping on the Galentine's Day bandwagon!

Embrace this holiday and celebrate your friendship with your closest gal pals. Whatever you love doing with your gals, do it today- whether it's a day of pampering at the spa or a night out dancing. Galentine's Day is all about our girlfriends. As the hashtag says, #NoBoysAllowed

You should also visit the Galentine's Day website! Not only can you send e-cards to your friends, but over 50 retailers have come together for Galentine's Day specials and surprises.

From The Archives: An Important Day...Thanks Mom & Dad

Happy Thursday!! I have a busy day, some excitement, and the last work day before an extra long weekend!! Looking forward to a few days away, some fun and hopefully good news!!

Some news I am trying not to think about...my birthday is on Saturday. Spending it with family, but no real plans. I've been too busy and have had too much on my mind to think about what I want to do to celebrate.

What I did want to do, was share this post from a couple of years ago, An Important Day...Thanks Mom & Dad.

While the entire post- as related to my parents- is still true, I wanted to share an excerpt:

My parents have stood by my side. They've cheered me on. They've supported me. They've laughed with me and celebrated with me. They've held me and comforted me while I cried. They gave me hope. They inspired me.

They have kept me grounded and humbled, while making sure I had every advantage.

I wasn't always nice to them or appreciative (hello teenage years), but I have always loved them. I'm thankful that my parents are, well, my parents. I appreciate them putting up with me, as well as everything they have ever done for me.

I'm truly the luckiest girl in the world because of who my mom and dad are.

I honestly have the best parents, I am so lucky and blessed. They have help shape me into who I am and they have made sure I was always loved and cared for. No one could ask for- or even be- better parents.

Thoughts On...Valentine's Day

Love is in the air...and so is bitterness, depending on your relationship status. Valentine's Day is on Saturday, which I am sure we are ALL aware of.

Those who are in love or in love with love, are counting down the days until the most romantic day of the year. Those who are single are on the bitter train and complaining about this overrated, fake holiday. And some are sweating and panicking because they have yet to make plans for their sweetheart or fear what they have planned just isn't good enough. Or aren't ready to propose.

When I was in University, I had a friend who despised Valentine's Day because of all the commercialism and he made sure everyone knew it. When he found out that it was also my birthday, he decided to make an exception and set his hatred aside- he wanted me to always have a good birthday and to always have a Valentine. So, regardless of whether or not we were single or in relationships, every year he asked me to be his Valentine and every year I said yes.  On Valentine's Day, he would send me a picture of a human heart. That's how he/we celebrated.

I am personally not a fan of Valentine's Day because it overshadows my birthday; This is something I've ranted about in the past and will not be doing in this post (but you can find past year's thoughts here and here).

I think that there are a lot of people who like the concept of this day; showing the ones you love how much they mean to you, doing something to celebrate your love, spending time with the one you love. I echo the sentiments of others; all of these actions should not be limited to one day.

Honestly, I feel, having one day of the entire year dedicated to such things results in disappointment, unnecessary pressure and stress, and expensive gifts (do you know the mark up on flowers alone???).

If we picked our own day to celebrate our love, I think it would be more meaningful and special. I've never had a good Valentine's Day (mainly because I'd rather celebrate my birthday), but when I think back on happier/meaningful/romantic times in my relationships...it was getting flowers for no reason, buying my favourite chocolates (salted caramel, FYI) because he saw them when he was out, reservations at a restaurant on a Wednesday night because it's their slow night and it would be like we had the place to ourselves, opening a bottle of wine we were saving and enjoying it over mundane conversations... Those were some of the moments I felt the most loved, cared for and special. None of them happened on Valentine's Day.

Or you can fall to society's pressure and get swept up in all the traditional Valentine's Day hype...expensive flowers, expensive dinner at a hard to get into restaurant, an expensive gift, marriage proposal. So cliche, but very much expected and anticipated.

To all the singles, embrace this holiday! You can show love for your co-workers, family and friends. Send out those Valentine's from elementary school, offer everyone Hugs and Kisses (the chocolates), have a dance party- so much fun and stress free. Tons of ways to make this dreaded holiday a fun Saturday night.

Self-love is also a great way to celebrate Valentine's Day. Book a spa day, read your favourite book or watch your favourite movie, binge on your favourite foods, spend the day in comfy clothes, soak in a bath, pamper and spoil yourself.

However you decide to celebrate, or not celebrate, I hope you have a great Valentine's Day. Make it fun. Enjoy it.

Love, after all, is in the air.

Hey, It's Ok!

That I didn't watch the Grammys. I just wasn't that interested. I heard it was a good show, if not long.

To be looking forward to my extra long weekend!! I'm off on Friday (vacation day from work) and Monday (Family Day)!! I don't have anything planned...but I'm still excited for the time off.

That I love networking events!! I used to go to them all the time, but had to cut back due to my busy schedule. I've started going again...I'm reminded how inspiring, supportive and fun networking events are.

To have recently tried (and fell in love with) Sullivan & Bleeker's Cookies & Cream Shortbread. Soooooo good!! If you're looking for gift ideas for me, look no further!

That my GPS died on me...I can't get anywhere without my GPS. It was a sad day.

To be debating going to the Brock Alumni event night, where Brock Alumni Association will be launching our Alumni Tartan!! I already have a mug with the tartan on it (a Christmas gift from a friend). I would love to go to the event, but it's almost 2 hours away and I need to be in the office early tomorrow.

That it's been a long time since I've participated in a blog swap, so I signed up for this one:

Inspire Me- Because You Loved Me

Oh Monday...I was hoping you'd be a snow day. We were supposed to get a lot of snow over the weekend, so I decided to stay at my apartment for the weekend, so traveling wouldn't be an issue. It did snow, but nearly as much it was supposed too. I had such a quiet and low key weekend but I could still use another day of rest and relaxation. I think I'm still recovering from my event 2 weeks ago; it was a 12+ hour work day and the end to my 70+ hour work week.

Even though today is not a snow day, I still have a short work week ahead of me; I have Friday off and next Monday is Family Day (another holiday). I don't have any plans for the long extra long weekend. I am hoping to be out of town for all of it, but no plans besides that.

I usually start the week with a quote for inspiration. Since Valentine's Day is on Saturday, I thought I would share two of my favourite quotes about love.

We all have at least one person who greatly influenced our lives. I've had a couple of people like this, but one person significantly changed who I was as a person and I know without them, I would be a completely different- not necessarily better- person. I know this person made me who I am today, changed my life and inspired me in the best way possible. We had our ups and downs, things weren't perfect...but they added so much to my life. Am I curious who I would be if I hadn't met them? Of course. But I'm happy who I am now, because I met them, and I wouldn't change that for the world.

There are few things better in the world than someone who loves and believes in you unconditionally. Again, we had our ups and downs, but I was cared for, loved and had someone who always, always, always believed in me. I fell in love for many reasons, but the way I was supported and cared for- despite what I was doing, how I was acting or what I was putting them through- was one of the main reasons I fell in love. That, and I knew I was loved when they drained my blister...if someone is willing to do something that gross for you, they must really care about you.

We all know that not all relationships are meant to last. We know that there are some loves that are only once in a lifetime. And we know that people fall in and out of love...things happen. But there is always that one person...the one who got away...the one who will always be 'unfinished business'...the one who is our forever love or our soul mate...the one person we can't let go of or forget about or, for some, move on from. Regardless of whether or not the relationships last, these are people who shaped us, who added value to our lives and who we made memories with. They are special people who will always hold a special place in our hearts.

"Words fall short every time I want to tell you how special you are to me, but all I can say is that my world is full of smiles whenever I think of you."

I've known for awhile that drinking lemon water in the morning was good for you, but I didn't realize there were 7 Benefits Of Starting Your Day With Lemon Water.

Like so many others, I love to sleep!! This article, What Happens During Sleep?, shows why our bodies love sleep.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday...I don't have any real plans. I might meet a friend for lunch, depending on how she's feeling and the weather. Otherwise, I think I'll just read, blog and hang out around the apartment. Nothing exciting, but hopefully relaxing!

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!!

Hey, It's Ok!

Airing My Dirty Laundry

To have had a snow day yesterday!! It was fantastic and totally made up for me having to cut my extra long weekend away short.

That I wasted away my snow day. I had so much to do and I did none of it. I spent the day in pj's, drinking hot chocolate and watching tv/DVDs. It was such an unproductive day and I don't even fee guilty about it.

To have not watched the Superbowl. I'm just not interested. And, because Canada is a different country than the US, they don't show the same commercials here. So, to watch 'for the commercials' isn't a reason.

That I youtubed the halftime show. Again, not interested (and not much of a Katy Perry fan...she reminds me of a cartoon), but I heard Missy Elliott made an appearance and I had to see that!! It was awesome and Missy should've been the halftime show!!

To have just realized it's my birthday month. No plans this year...I need to get on that. I won't be able to top last year's celebrations...but I still need to do something.

Inspire Me- Happening

What's the best way to start off the week? With a snow day!!!! We are supposed to get up to 35 cm of snow, plus high winds...none of that is fun, but it does result in a snow day, so yea!! You know the weather is pretty bad when schools- including universities- are closed...usually buses are cancelled but schools remain open.

I plan on spending the day in my pj's, drinking hot chocolate and not doing much. For everyone affected by this snow storm....stay safe and warm

I hope that everyone had a great weekend!! I had an extra, extra long weekend that was cut short. I only worked until 1pm on Thursday, had Friday off and was not supposed to be in the office until noon today. I was away from the weekend-the first time in a month- and I had to leave on Sunday because there was a snowstorm warning for Southern Ontario. I could've stayed put and risked being storm stayed- which would have been fine by me!!- but I need to be in the office for 8:30am on Tuesday and there was no guarantee that I would be able to make it safely back in time. So, I left Sunday morning instead of Monday morning.
It was nice to get away for the weekend...lots of snow Thursday (after I arrived) and Friday, so I spent all of my time inside. I did a little bit of reading and a lot of DVD watching, but it was still enjoyable.
Anyway, some inspiration for the week:
This is something I need to constantly tell myself. I have been working on something for the past four months- off and on. Things will be going well, and then it doesn't pan out. The 'not panning out' has happened 3 times. One time, it was so close to working out, I could taste it. Then...I don't know what happened (I have my suspicions)...but it wasn't the end result I wanted or expected.

Just because it's not happening, doesn't mean it won't happen. I just means the timing isn't right or that there is something better waiting. I just need to keep trying. Every time it doesn't work, I just need to pick myself up and try again.

It will eventually happen. I need to be patient, persistent and have faith. There is something better, it will work out.

It might feel like it will never happen...but I know it will.

There is something better for me.

It WILL happen.

Eventually.

Yet another study shows that red wine is good for you. This time, a glass of red wine is equivalent to one hour at the gym.

Going along with the wine theme...There Are Two Types Of Women: Red Wine Drinkers And White Wine Drinkers. I don't think this is true or accurate, but still a fun read.

Moving away from wine and to one of my loves, books! I actually read this article a while back and just had to share, Book Lovers Are Obsessed With This Website.
